Where care meets confidence.
Crowned for Good, Inc. is a community-centered committed to dignity, cultural affirmation, and access to care.
Our pilot program, Crowns of Confidence, provides free hair services for children and teaches caregivers how to care for their child’s hair at home – even when the money is tight.
The 3 C’s. Crowned. Connected. Confident.
Why We Started
It started with a child named Jahriel. (That’s him in the above photo with Erica.)
Seven years ago, Jahriel’s mother, grandmother, and aunt brought him to Erica to start his loc journey. He was just three years old and living with cerebral palsy. Every year like clockwork, Jahriel came to the salon around his birthday for a retwist. His hair was cared for at home, but professional services weren’t something his family could regularly afford.
One year, we made the decision that changed everything, We did his service for free. Not because we had to—but because we could, and because it was the right thing to do. Anisa would personally pick Jahriel and his grandmother up and bring them to the salon. What seemed like a small act of kindness became a powerful reminder: access matters, dignity matters, and every child deserves to feel seen and cared for.
Then another moment stopped us in our tracks.
A young girl sat in Erica’s chair and shared that she loved her locs—but her classmates didn’t. They made fun of her. She was a beautiful Black girl attending a predominantly white school, learning far too early that the world might try to turn her crown into a target. In that moment, we realized hair wasn’t the issue. Confidence was. Safety was. Belonging was.
Kids can be cruel—especially when they sense a vulnerability. And too many of our children are carrying wounds they didn’t ask for.
That’s when we knew we had to do more.
Crowned for Good, Inc. was created to address the deeper need behind the hairstyle—the need for confidence, affirmation, and power. Through our Crowns of Confidence initiative, we provide monthly, no-cost hair services to underserved youth in New Orleans, ensuring they show up to school, community spaces, and life feeling proud of who they are.
But we don’t stop there. We also host monthly educational forums for caregivers, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to care for their children’s hair long after the program ends. Because true empowerment doesn’t expire—it multiplies.
This work is about more than hair.
It’s about access.
It’s about dignity.
It’s about interrupting cycles of shame and replacing them with pride.
When our children look good, they feel good.
When they feel good, they do good.
With Crowns of Confidence, we are not just styling hair. We are building confidence, power, and futures—one crown at a time.

The Impact We’re Building
Our pilot program is designed to do more than provide hair services–it’s meant to change how children see themselves and how they show up in the world.
Through Crowns of Confidence, we envision a future where underserved youth in New Orleans walk into school feeling affirmed, proud and powerful–without worrying whether their natural hair makes them a target.
-
Students who once felt self-conscious about their hair leave our program with a stronger self-esteem, increased confidence, and pride in their natural crowns.
-
As confidence grows, participation follows. Students demonstrate improved attendance, greater classroom engagement, and increased involvement in school activities.
-
By affirming students and educating caregivers, the program contributes to fewer incidents of hair-based teasing and a safer, more inclusive school environment.
-
Caregivers complete the program equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to maintain their child’s hair–extending the impact well beyond the pilot period.
-
Schools experience Crowns of Confidence as a trusted partner that supports student well-being, strengthens school culture, and deepens family engagement.
-
The pilot establishes a proven, repeatable modeo–demonstrating that culturally affirming care leads to measurable improvements in student confidence and engagement.
Why This Matters
Hair is deeply tied to identity and self-worth.
When children feel confident, they participate more.
When they feel affirmed, they take up space.
When they feel powerful, they begin to imagine bigger futures.
Crowns of Confidence is not just about hair—it’s about access, dignity, and opportunity.
